Traffic Stop in Haralson County Leads to Methamphetamine Arrest

HARALSON COUNTY, Ga. — A traffic stop in Haralson County earlier this month led to the discovery of suspected methamphetamine and the arrest of a driver, according to authorities.

The incident happened Monday, May 11, when Deputy Dusty Smith observed a gray Kia traveling south on Old Highway 100 with a partially obscured license plate, the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputy Smith initiated a traffic stop, and the vehicle stopped at the intersection of Carlton Johnson Road and Georgia Highway 100.

During the stop, authorities said the driver, identified as John Campbell, appeared nervous, trembling and breathing rapidly.

Deputy Smith requested assistance from a K-9 unit and was joined by a member of the Interstate Task Force. K-9 Cora conducted a free-air sniff around the vehicle and alerted deputies to the presence of narcotics, according to the sheriff’s office.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, deputies located two bags containing suspected methamphetamine.

Campbell was taken into custody and charged with violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act for possession of methamphetamine.

The case has been turned over to the Northwest Georgia Drug Task Force for further investigation.
