Bailey invites voters to mock election system at Election Office

Community

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – During Monday’s White County Board of Commissioners meeting, Election Supervisor Akyn Bailey invited voters to stop by the elections office to participate in a mock election to help voters — especially first-time voters — become familiar with the new voting machines.

“I’m excited for everyone to come by my office,” she said. The Election Training Precinct that features the Dominion and KnowInk equipment is available during normal business hours.

During her presentation to the Board, Chairman Travis Turner said, “Now is the perfect opportunity, before we get into the May election to get comfortable with what the state has given us.”

Commissioner Edwin Nix questioned Bailey about how absentee ballots will be handled now that Georgia’s voting laws have changed. In the past, elderly and disabled voters were on a permanent list to receive an absentee ballot application but that is no longer the case.

“If you’re elderly or disabled, you have to apply 78 days prior to every election cycle, meaning the first election that year,” she said.

Voters will still be able to access an application online and through the election office by request.

Nicholson challenges Goodger for District 1 seat on Board of Commissioners

News

WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – Jerry Nicholson is a candidate for the White County Board of Commissioners in District 1. Fetch Your News attempted to interview Nicholson but he said he was too busy with his campaign and offered this written statement instead:

“First and foremost, I’m running for District 1 Board of Commissioners to serve the citizens of White County and my district as a Republican. I’ve lived in White County for over 25 years and I have been a native of Hall County and Gainesville my entire life. I have four grown sons which is my greatest accomplishment and they all have children giving me eight grandchildren.

“I have been in business myself my entire life and a business owner in Gainesville and White County. I currently own Lanier Egg Sales and real estate holdings in White County and Hall County. Being in the agriculture and real estate business I have a very diverse background and currently active in both.

“I am a Conservative Christian businessman, past member of White Counties Republican Executive Board and delegate at the state and district GOP convention.

“I’ve served on at least 17 mission trips on native American reservations for a group called adventures in missions in North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana and I attend Free Chapel in Gainesville, Georgia.”

A review of Nicholson’s Facebook page shows that his goals are to make White County the most pro- business community in north Georgia, to bring new thinking to the Board of Commissioners to finish long overdue projects and to “balance tourism, agriculture and small business.”
