WHITE COUNTY, Ga. – One person died and another was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident on SR 17 in White County Saturday morning.
The accident occurred after a Georgia State Patrol trooper patrolling the Blood Mountain and Richard Russell Scenic Bypass attempted to stop two speeding vehicles, a Mitsubishi Lancer and Dodge Charger.
When the vehicles reached Ga. 75 Alternate and Ga.17 the Dodge Challenger turned south (right) and the silver Mitsubishi Lancer turned north (left). The trooper pursued the Mitsubishi northbound on Ga. 17. The Mitsubishi failed to negotiate a curve to the right at a very high rate of speed, it crossed the centerline and struck a Nissan Murano SUV head-on. The driver of the Mitsubishi died at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The driver of the Murano was seriously injured and transported to the same hospital.a result of being struck by the fleeing car, Taylor said.
Helen Police Department notified GSP that the black Dodge Challenger had crashed in Helen and was taken into custody by the Georgia State Patrol. The names of those involved have not been released at this time.
