LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. — Motorists are being urged to use extra caution on North Georgia roads as cyclists begin training for the annual Six Gap Bicycle Ride, scheduled for Sept. 26-27.
With the event approaching, drivers can expect to see an increase in cyclists training on roadways throughout the area, particularly during the early morning hours.
Officials are reminding motorists to slow down, remain patient and provide cyclists with at least three feet of clearance when passing. Drivers should only pass when it is safe to do so and are encouraged to consider alternate routes during periods of heavy cycling activity when possible.
Cyclists have the same right to use the roadway as other vehicles, and motorists are being asked to remain especially alert as riders prepare for the challenging North Georgia event.
The Six Gap ride is known for taking cyclists through the mountainous terrain of North Georgia, including several of the region’s well-known mountain gaps.
Drivers and cyclists are encouraged to share the road and remain attentive in the weeks leading up to the Sept. 26-27 event.
