Haralson man arrested for child molestation

PRESS RELEASE – On Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, the Haralson County Crime Suppression Unit, along with members of the Criminal Investigative Division arrested Charles Matthew Smith for felony Child Molestation warrants.

The search for Smith began last week after criminal charges were taken in a child molestation investigation conducted by Crimes Against Children Specialist, Investigator Brent Duggins.

This case was referred to the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office by the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) in the middle of January 2024.

Investigator Duggins worked the case along with DFCS and found probable cause to secure warrants on Charles Matthew Smith for Aggavated Child Molestation and other child crime offenses.

The case is still under investigation and there could be additional charges.

Charles Matthew Smith, a 40-year-old W/M out of Buchanan, GA is currently charged with Child Molestation, two counts of Aggravated Child Molestation and two counts of Aggravated Sodomy.

“These cases shock the consciousness, they are some of the worst of the worst cases we deal with,” states Sheriff Stacy Williams. “Crimes against children are some of the hardest cases to work. I appreciate the effort that Investigator Duggins put in as he carefully worked this case. I would also like to thank our Crime Suppression Unit for their outstanding work in going after and capturing those who are wanted for serious felonies so that families and victims can get justice. Protecting children continues to be a priority for us.”
