Gov. Kemp Suspends Towns County Sheriff Amid Misconduct Investigation

HIAWASSEE, Ga. (Oct. 21, 2025) — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has suspended Towns County Sheriff Kenneth “Ken” Henderson for 60 days following allegations of misconduct connected to a 2024 altercation with a Hiawassee police officer.

According to state officials, the suspension follows a recommendation from a review panel that included Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr and sheriffs from Coweta and Newton counties. The panel was appointed last month to determine whether Henderson should remain in office during an ongoing criminal investigation.

The case stems from a December 2024 incident in which Henderson allegedly became involved in a physical confrontation with Hiawassee Police Officer José Carvajal while responding to a deputy-involved shooting. Body-camera footage reportedly captured the encounter, prompting a state review.

Governor Kemp later appointed Special Prosecutor Frank Wood to oversee the investigation, which remains active. Henderson has not been charged with a crime.

In a prior statement, Henderson denied wrongdoing and called reports of misconduct “misinformation.” He will remain suspended with pay while the inquiry continues.

State officials said the temporary suspension is intended to maintain public confidence in law enforcement while the investigation is completed.
