Gov. Kemp Orders New Investigation Into Towns County Sheriff Ken Henderson Over New Misconduct Allegations

TOWNS COUNTY, Ga. — Gov. Brian Kemp has ordered a new investigation into Towns County Sheriff Ken Henderson after new allegations of misconduct were brought to his attention on Friday, June 26.

According to an executive order signed by Kemp on Saturday, June 27, the allegations are separate from those examined during previous investigations involving Henderson.

Henderson has been suspended from office since last year following an investigation into an alleged physical altercation with a Hiawassee police officer. Kemp initially suspended Henderson for 60 days through an executive order signed on Oct. 21, 2025.

Under Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 15-16-26), the governor may appoint a special investigative committee when allegations of criminal conduct, misconduct in office, or incapacity are made against a sheriff.

Kemp appointed Georgia Attorney General Christopher Carr, Coweta County Sheriff Lenn Wood, and Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown to serve on the three-member committee.

The committee has been directed to investigate the new allegations and submit its findings and recommendations to the governor within 30 days of the executive order.

The executive order does not disclose the nature of the allegations, and state officials have not released additional details about the investigation.
