Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office Warns Residents About Fraudulent Toll Violation Scam

GILMER COUNTY, Ga. – The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a fraudulent “toll violation” notice that has been widely shared on social media in recent days.

According to a public alert issued by the sheriff’s office, officials have received multiple reports over the weekend and again Monday regarding a document titled “Notice of Traffic Citation Hearing – Toll Violation.” Authorities said the notice is not legitimate and is part of an ongoing scam.

The sheriff’s office identified several red flags in the document, including the use of a generic judge’s name, a QR code demanding immediate payment, and threats of arrest and driver’s license suspension. Officials also noted that the image has been circulating heavily online.

Authorities emphasized that courts do not distribute random QR codes requesting immediate payment for citations. Residents who receive similar messages are urged not to scan QR codes, click on links, or provide personal or banking information.

Anyone unsure about the validity of a citation is advised to contact the appropriate court directly using a verified phone number — not one listed in a suspicious message.

The sheriff’s office cautioned that scammers often rely on panic to pressure victims into acting quickly. Residents are encouraged to slow down and verify information before responding to any unexpected legal notice.

Individuals who believe they have been targeted or who have questions can contact the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 706-635-8911. Officials are also asking community members to share the warning to help prevent others from falling victim to the scam.
