Forsyth County Man Charged with Murder After Shooting Victim Dies Two Months Later

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Forsyth County man is now facing a murder charge after the victim in a May shooting died from his injuries nearly two months later, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a shooting on Shiloh Road in early May, where they found 51-year-old Antonio Sanchez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Before being transported to the hospital, Sanchez told deputies that “Luis” had shot him.

According to investigators, interviews with the property’s landlord and a witness revealed Sanchez had been involved in an altercation with his roommate, Jose Luis Delgado Mendoza, 35. Detectives determined the dispute stemmed from an argument over roof repairs.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Unit located and arrested Mendoza the following day. During the investigation, K-9 Kimber, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) dog, located the firearm investigators say was used in the shooting.

Investigators said Mendoza told detectives the verbal dispute became physical. Rather than leaving the situation, he allegedly retrieved a handgun from his room and confronted Sanchez again. Authorities said Sanchez advanced toward Mendoza with a machete, prompting Mendoza to fire, striking Sanchez.

According to investigators, Sanchez then dropped the machete. As Mendoza was leaving the residence, authorities allege he fired multiple additional shots at Sanchez before fleeing the scene.

Mendoza was initially arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

On July 4, Sanchez died from injuries sustained in the shooting. Following his death, detectives obtained an additional warrant charging Mendoza with murder.

Mendoza remains in the Forsyth County Jail without bond.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office used the case as a reminder about the consequences of allowing disputes to escalate into violence, urging residents to walk away from confrontations whenever possible.
