Firework Laws

PRESS RELEASE – Each year during the week of July 4th, Dade County Sheriff’s Office and Dade County 911 receives multiple calls in reference to people shooting fireworks in the county. Most of those calls fall within the legal limits of the law, and results in the possible delay of crucial resources to legitimate emergencies.

Dade County follows state law set forth to define the times/dates that fireworks can be used, and does not have a county ordinance for fireworks.

Georgia Law allows citizens to shoot fireworks during the below listed dates and times.

* The use of consumer fireworks is legal until 11:59 PM statewide around certain holidays. Those holidays are January 1, the last Saturday and Sunday in May (before Memorial Day), July 3 and 4, the first Monday in September (Labor Day), and December 31 (New Year’s Eve). Additionally, State Law allows the use of consumer fireworks on January 1 from 12:00 AM (midnight) to 1:00 AM.

* Any days other than what’s listed above, the use of consumer fireworks is permitted under Georgia Law beginning at 10:00 AM and ending at 11:59 PM.

* Fireworks cannot be used within the right-of-way of any public road, street, highway, or railroad, within 100 yards of a nursing home, hospital, other health facility, gas station, gas refining plant, water treatment plant, waste-water plant, electric plant, electric substation, or airport/helipad.

* Georgia Law allows those over age 18 to use fireworks within the hours noted above.

If you plan on celebrating within the city limits of Trenton, their fireworks ordinance matches state law.

Please do not call 911 if someone is shooting fireworks in a legal manner as stated above.

To report possible UNLAWFUL USE of fireworks, please call the non-emergency line for the Dade County 911 Center at 706-657-4111.
