Firefighter Suffers Personal Loss as Blaze Destroys Shop on Her Property

FANNIN COUNTY, Ga. – A structure fire resulted in the total loss of a shop and its contents, including multiple vehicles, while firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby residence.

The property belonged to Becky Callihan, a local paramedic, firefighter, and Fannin County coroner.

According to officials, the first engine arrived to find the shop, located approximately 50 feet from the home, fully engulfed in flames. Radiant heat from the fire had already begun melting the siding on the residence, raising immediate concerns about further structural damage.

Firefighters faced additional hazards due to several pressurized containers inside the shop, increasing the risk of explosions and rapid fire spread. Crews prioritized protecting the home and were able to stop the fire from advancing, successfully limiting damage to the residence.

After securing the structure, responders shifted focus to a fast-moving ground fire ignited by the blaze. With dry conditions and a Red Flag Warning in effect, the risk of wildfire spread was elevated.

Fire crews utilized one of three recently acquired pond pumps to draft water from a nearby creek, ensuring a continuous supply for firefighting efforts. The equipment allowed water tenders to be refilled efficiently and played a key role in sustaining suppression operations.

The ground fire was ultimately contained before it could spread further, officials said, crediting the coordinated response of crews on scene.

No cause has been determined, and the fire remains under investigation.

Officials emphasized that while the fire was not related to outdoor burning, current conditions remain dangerous. Residents are urged to avoid activities that could spark fires and to report any signs of smoke or flames immediately.
