WHITE COUNTY, Ga. — A wildfire burning on Buzzard Mountain is now approximately 60% contained, according to officials with White County Public Safety, as crews continue efforts to fully control the blaze.
During a media briefing Monday, April 13, officials said the fire is currently estimated at about 26 acres. The U.S. Forest Service has successfully stopped the forward progression of the fire, and crews are expected to remain on scene over the coming days to strengthen containment lines and monitor conditions.
Between 30 and 40 firefighters are currently assigned to the incident, with additional personnel arriving from neighboring areas to assist. Agencies involved in the response include the Georgia Forestry Commission and White County Fire Services.
Officials emphasized that no homes are currently threatened.
The update marks significant progress from earlier stages of the fire. When crews first responded, the wildfire was estimated at 60 acres and only 20% contained, with two aircraft assisting in suppression efforts. By late Sunday night, crews had established a perimeter around a spot fire estimated at 30 acres, while the original fire was measured at approximately 16 acres.
Authorities said containment efforts have steadily improved since that time.
Despite the progress, officials warned that fire danger remains elevated. A Red Flag Warning is still in effect due to low humidity and conditions favorable for rapid fire spread. Residents are strongly urged to avoid any outdoor burning.
“Even small fires can quickly become dangerous under these conditions,” officials said.
Speakers at Monday’s briefing included White County Public Safety Director David Murphy and Incident Commander Dan Cottrell with the U.S. Forest Service.
Officials say updates will continue as crews work toward full containment.
