19-Year-Old Jonesboro Man Dies in Accidental Drowning at Panther Creek Falls

HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. — A 19-year-old Jonesboro man died Sunday afternoon after an accidental drowning at Panther Creek Falls, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.

Game Wardens responded to the scene at approximately 4 p.m. on June 7 following reports of a drowning at the popular hiking destination in Habersham County.

The victim was identified as Reginal Starks, 19, of Jonesboro. Authorities said Starks was recovered from approximately 12 feet of water by deputies with the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office.

Following the recovery, Game Wardens assisted personnel from Habersham County Fire Services and Rabun County Search and Rescue in transporting Starks approximately 900 yards through rugged terrain to the nearest roadway. The victim was then turned over to the Habersham County Coroner’s Office.

Habersham County Coroner Kasey McEntire expressed condolences to the victim’s family.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” McEntire said.

Authorities said the incident was witnessed and has been ruled an accidental drowning.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office has asked the public to respect the privacy of the victim’s family and said no further information will be released.
