Significant storm damage in Gilmer County

GILMER COUNTY Ga. – Following a series of severe storms that moved through the area late on the night of May 8, reports of significant damage in Gilmer County have been made.

A tornado warning was issued on the night of May 8, at 10: 43 p.m. and lasted until 11:15 p.m.

Although damage and debris are present in the area, there is not yet confirmation that a tornado touched down in Gilmer County last night. The National Weather Service will survey the area to confirm if a tornado touched down.

Out of an abundance of caution, Gilmer County schools were also out the following day due to the severe weather.

Gilmer County was also under a tornado watch until 1:00 p.m. and a flood warning until 3:00 p.m on May 9.

These conditions can make traveling very dangerous.

The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office shared images of damage sustained on Sunlight Road.
