FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. – One suspect has been taken into custody as authorities continue investigating an armed robbery connected to Floyd County, Georgia, law enforcement officials said.
According to local officials, deputies and the Centre Police Department located and arrested Jeffrey Lemar Smith, 23, of Gadsden, early Monday morning. Smith was found hiding inside a dumpster near West Main Street and Watson Drive in Centre.
The arrest followed an overnight search involving multiple agencies, including the sheriff’s office, the Centre Police Department, the Leesburg Police Department, Cherokee County Rescue, and Cherokee County EMA. Authorities said drones were used during the several-hour search of the area. After the search concluded, officials believe the remaining suspects may have fled the area.
Smith has been charged with attempting to elude law enforcement. Officials said the armed robbery itself remains under active investigation by the Floyd County Police Department, which is serving as the lead agency in the case. Additional charges against Smith are expected.
Law enforcement agencies said they are continuing to work together to locate the two remaining suspects, who may have connections to other counties. Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity by calling 911.
The investigation remains ongoing.
