PRESS RELEASE – On Saturday, June 22, deputies with the Stephens County Sheriff’s “STING” Unit were conducting a concentrated patrol in the Gumlog Road and Brookhaven Circle areas in response to tips received by the Sheriff’s Office regarding illegal drug activity. Multiple arrests were made.

During the evening, deputies conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Brookhaven Circle and Lakeshore Circle in regard to insurance and suspended registration on a white in color Ford Taurus sedan.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Gary Burton, 47 of Toccoa, refused to stop until being blocked by a deputy near the home of one of the passengers. After exiting the vehicle, the deputy secured Burton and informed the driver and his two passengers of the reason for the traffic stop. Burton informed the deputy that his license was suspended, and the passengers provided names and dates of birth.

A male passenger who identified himself as Demetrius Brock, 36 of Martin, was found to have a warrant out of Franklin County for his arrest. The female passenger, later identified as Lindsey Jones, 27 of Martin, requested to use the restroom while the deputy ran their information. The deputy allowed her to use the restroom. The deputy then learned that Jones provided false information about her identity.

When a second unit arrived, deputies secured Burton and Brock. After attempting to contact Jones, the deputy was given consent to search the home and determined that Jones fled the scene. The deputy deployed K-9 Lady to conduct a search for Jones who appeared to have fled through the woods. K-9 Lady and her handler were aggressed by other dogs on the property, and Lady eventually lost Jones’ scent. The deputy called off the search and returned to the home. The deputy then deployed K-9 Dexter to conduct a search of the vehicle for narcotics, which resulted in a positive alert. The search did not result in locating any illegal substances. The deputy then called a wrecker service to transport the vehicle.

While waiting for the towing company to arrive, a white in color sedan drove toward the target house then made a U-turn. A secondary unit initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. The female passenger, identified as Loretta Allen, 49 of Toccoa, informed the deputy that she was responding to a call for help from Jones. Jones called Allen, asking her to come to Stumpy’s Gas Station, but Jones was not at the location when they arrived so they proceeded to the residence. The deputy ran identification information for the driver and her passengers who provided names and dates of birth.

Deputies were given consent to search the vehicle and Allen’s bag. The bag search resulted in the discovery of a baggie of a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine. All the occupants of the vehicle were detained in order to continue the search of the sedan. The overall search of the vehicle led to the discovery of suspected methamphetamine, marijuana, and glass pipes used for illegal drugs.

The passengers were later identified as Kevin Gober, 50 of Martin, and Leonard Brown, 51 of Toccoa. Brown has outstanding warrants in Stephens County, and both passengers provided false information to the deputy regarding their identities. Brown, Gober, and Allen were all transported to the Stephens County Jail without incident.
