DUI arrest in Elbert County

PRESS RELEASE – Sheriff Jamie Callaway reported that on Thursday afternoon, 1/23/2025, a Lt. with the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and driving erratically on Washington Hwy.
After the deputy initiated his emergency lights and siren, the suspect vehicle continued traveling south on Hwy 17, failing to stop.
The deputy observed the vehicle traveling in the opposite lane of traffic near Charles Yeargin Road, and then the vehicle slowed and turned into a driveway.
The deputy ordered the suspect out of the vehicle and the suspect began to actively resist, at which time the deputy called for assistance and deployed his taser.
After being tased, the suspect continued to struggle with the deputy until the deputy was finally able to take the suspect into custody.
The suspect is charged with DUI, speeding, possession of Marijuana, failure to maintain lane, passing in no passing zone, and misd. obstruction of an officer.
