WHITFIELD COUNTY, Ga. – A Dalton man has been arrested following an investigation into reports of multiple dogs being kept in small cages outside a Walmart on Shugart Road, according to the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation began after a post on the “What’s Going on Dalton” Facebook page was shared and commented on hundreds of times, generating numerous tips from community members. The reports prompted a joint response by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office and the Dalton Police Department.

Authorities said the investigation led to the arrest of Nickalous Payton of Dalton. He was taken into custody by the Dalton Police Department following the on-scene investigation.

Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control officers also seized the dogs and transported them to the Whitfield County Animal Shelter.

In a statement following the arrest, the sheriff’s office thanked the public for bringing the situation to the attention of law enforcement, noting the large number of residents who tagged the agency and Sheriff Darren Pierce on social media.

Officials also reminded the public that while social media can be a valuable tool for sharing information, it should not be used in place of calling emergency services.

“If you see something, please call it in,” the sheriff’s office said. “If we get a call, we are able to respond faster and more appropriately to help the citizens (and pets) of Whitfield County.”

Because of the nature of the investigation, authorities also encouraged residents to familiarize themselves with local animal ordinances. The investigation remains under the jurisdiction of the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office and Dalton Police Department.
