HARALSON COUNTY, Ga. – A Haralson County man is in custody following a multi-agency investigation into a string of mail and package thefts reported across the eastern portion of the county.

According to the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office, reports began earlier this week of mailboxes being opened and mail and packages stolen from residences stretching from Bremen to Draketown. After the sheriff’s office alerted the public, authorities received numerous tips from residents, including surveillance footage believed to show the suspect vehicle.

On Wednesday night, a citizen discovered a large quantity of discarded mail, which deputies collected and documented as part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigators identified Anthony Evans as the suspect after utilizing Flock camera technology to locate the vehicle involved. Sgt. Brent Duggins with the sheriff’s office Criminal Investigative Division coordinated with Deputy Hunter Barnes, along with the Bremen Police Department and the Georgia State Patrol, to locate the vehicle.

Authorities said Evans was taken into custody shortly after 3 p.m. following a traffic stop in which the suspect vehicle was boxed in by law enforcement. A search warrant executed on the vehicle led to the recovery of a large amount of stolen mail, including sensitive documents such as W-2 forms.

Evans remains in custody and is facing a felony charge of theft by taking, along with additional charges. The United States Postal Inspector is also involved in the case. Officials say the investigation remains active and additional charges may be forthcoming.

The sheriff’s office reported that a significant amount of stolen mail has been recovered. Deputies will be working to identify and contact victims over the coming week to return the recovered items, noting that the process may take time due to the volume of evidence involved.
