Lumpkin Girls Win While Boys Almost Pull Off a Big Upset

The Lumpkin County boys and girl basketball programs hosted the visiting Gilmer Bobcats on Tuesday night. The girls continued their hot run and dominated the first varsity matchup of the night. They improved to 8-1 winning the game 67-27. The Lumpkin boys team had a hard-fought game that was up for grabs against an undefeated Bobcats team. They came up just short though losing 52-47 falling to 3-6 on the year.

Girls Recap:

The Lumpkin girls came into the matchup heavily favored as the #1 ranked team in AAA Georgia girls basketball. Even with the score very lopsided, the Lady Indians did not play their best basketball on Tuesday night. They shot just 23% from three and only shot 50% from the free-throw line. While they did outrebound Gilmer by 1 the key stat of the night was steals. As they had 28 steals to only 9 for Gilmer. All those extra shot opportunities accounted for the lady Indians lopsided 67-27 win.

Boys Recap:

The Indians came into the game 3-5 while Gilmer came in unbeaten. Many expected this to be a lopsided win for Gilmer. The Indians fought hard though and made it a four-quarter game. Lumpkin got big contributions from Jones Harris who had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Preston Cox had 11 points and 5 rebounds while Cal Faulkner had 7 points, 4 assists, and 7 rebounds. Lumpkin tied Gilmer with 29 rebounds each and shot a little better them from the free-throw line. Gilmer though shot better from the field and from three leading to their 52-47 win.
