PRESS RELEASE: The following press release has been issued by Union County Sheriff’s Office in response to a new scam going around.
“We have had several reports of a new scam that is going around involving people pretending to be from United Community Bank.
One of the phone numbers involved in this scam was (770) 985-2337, but it could come from any phone number. The person is calling and telling the potential victim that they are with United Community Bank.
The person on the phone will use all sorts of tricks to tell you that you are a victim of fraud/scams and will need some sort of personal information from you.
Oftentimes, they try to get you to stay on the phone as long as possible. They may threaten you with consequences if you disconnect the call.
Please do not fall for any of these scams. If you do not know the person that you are speaking with, hang up and call them on the number that you know to be a legitimate phone number.
Never provide any personal information over the phone. If the bank is truly calling you, they have all of that information.
Unrelated to this incident, but just as a reminder about these types of scams, please do not click on any links that are sent to you in a text message unless you know FOR SURE that they are coming from someone you know.
If you are not certain, you can always call that person and verify that they sent you a link. Also, never provide anyone a security code that is sent via text message to your phone unless you know the person that you are providing the security code to.
If you are ever in doubt about something or just have that gut feeling that something is wrong, please feel free to contact the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Our office number is (706) 439-6066.”
